Róisín Carlos | DG DEVCO
October is the month of traineeships in Brussels. I was not alone in arriving to the city to start work in an EU institution, as 1000 trainees flooded Brussels along side me. With most trainees new to the city, and all of us excited to catch a glimpse into the world of the EU politics, I found myself among many like-minded young professionals, all eager to meet new people and start their careers.
We were slowly introduced to our traineeship programme, as the first week was filled with an introductory conference and various training sessions to prepare us for what to expect in the coming months. It wasn’t all work and no play, however, as the beginning of the traineeship arrived with many events organised amongst trainees to get to know each other while discovering Brussels.
I found myself within one of the biggest groups of trainees in DG DEVCO (Directorate for International Cooperation and Development), the DG that I will be working with throughout my five months. We are almost 40 trainees all together, from 16 nationalities, working across the different units of the DG! From the beginning, I was welcomed into my own unit as a member of the team, and given interesting tasks to immediately start with. While it has been a steep learning curve (especially getting to grips with the Commission’s infamous love of acronyms!) my team is supportive and I’m learning as I go.
With these great first impressions, I am now looking forward to the exciting 5 months ahead!
