Michael gives us insight into his career as an Administrative Officer in the Department of Health.
Please tell us a little bit about your role.
I work in the Oral Health Unit in the Primary Care Oversight and Performance division. My role entails developing a strategic workforce plan for the oral healthcare profession. This involves working with various stakeholders to examine the education and training of all oral healthcare professionals. This will ensure that there is a suitable oral healthcare workforce in Ireland with the appropriate skill mix.
What were your reasons for applying for your role?
I applied for this position as I have a health-related qualification and thought this role would be interesting and relevant for me. Also, I always wanted to work in a health policy role, so the job description ticked all the relevant boxes for me.
What do you value most about your job?
What I value most is the help and support I get from the Department of Health. I get on really well with all members of the team and with others. I feel there is someone that I can ask if I need support.
What are some of the benefits and supports available to you?
The benefits available are a competitive salary which is one of the reasons I applied for the role. Also, the ability to be able to work remotely is a huge advantage and a bonus of being in my role. In terms of supports, I feel there are great training courses available. I am currently undertaking an Emerging Leaders Graduate Programme which is enhancing my knowledge and will help me in my future as a Civil Servant.
What opportunities has this role provided for you?
The role has provided me with numerous opportunities as I have had to attend conferences and meet many stakeholders. This has improved my communications and my ability to negotiate with key stakeholders. I have also had the chance to work with the Chief Dental Officer which is very exciting and varied work as you feel the impact oral health is having on a global scale.
What has surprised you since starting this role?
I believe what has surprised me most since I began my role is the various stakeholders I have met. I have had regular discussions with the HSE and other key stakeholders, which I have learned a lot from and is one of the aspects of the role I find interesting.
What aspect of the role do you particularly enjoy?
I particularly enjoy the research aspects of my role. I enjoy researching various topics on workforce aspects when drafting various briefings that are required by senior management. Additionally, I enjoy working with the various members of my team.
Would you recommend a career in the public sector and why?
I would recommend a career in the public sector as it has lots of benefits. I believe having a competitive salary is beneficial as well as the support that is provided to you. I find the work both interesting and diverse. Also, you get to work on topics that are important nationally and can have an impact on people's lives so it's quite rewarding too.
Anything else you would like to share?
If you're afraid of applying for a role because you think you're not able to do it, I would suggest going for it. I really enjoy working in the civil service and would recommend anyone thinking about applying for a role to fill in their applications.
