Cillian gives us insight into his career as an Administrative Officer in the Department of Finance.
Please tell us a little bit about your role.
I have been working as an Administrative Officer Economist in the Economic Division of the Department of Finance for 5 months. The main focus of my role is on the economic analysis of tax policy. This includes a focus on the role and evaluation of tax expenditures as well as assessing the impact of both domestic and international tax changes on the economy. The role involves the application of economic data and quantitative methodologies to inform fiscal policy.
What were your reasons for applying for your role?
After my time in college, I felt that a role in the Irish Government Economic & Evaluation Service (IGEES) would suit my strengths and interests in economics and current affairs.
What do you value most about your job?
The opportunities and courses available to me in the Department are valuable for the work I do currently and for my career progression. I also value the variety of tasks I conduct.
What are some of the benefits and supports available to you?
There are a wide variety of in-house courses available to employees, ranging from improving your writing and excel skills to communication techniques and Irish language courses. The ability to work some days of the week from home and flexible working is also accommodated.
What opportunities has this role provided for you?
I have had the opportunity to meet Administrative Officers from across the civil service at IGEES induction events while also learning about the work that is conducted across the civil service. My work allows me to contribute to various annual publications by the Department of Finance, including the tax expenditure report.
What has surprised you since starting this role?
The range of opportunities I was given upon starting meant that I immediately felt like I was contributing to the division in a meaningful manner. I was given responsibility and freedom to lead on certain topics and present my work at internal seminars as well as representing the Department at international meetings and seminars.
What aspect of the role do you particularly enjoy?
I enjoy a variety of tasks of varying complexity that I work on at any one time. There is also a social aspect with different events organised throughout the year.
Would you recommend a career in the public sector and why?
I would recommend a career in the public sector. There is great opportunity for progression in your career and there is an ability to work in different departments or divisions within departments. The colleagues I work with were also very supportive when I started my new role.

My time in the department has been engaging and those I work with have been helpful in settling in and progressing in my role.
