Mujidat tells us about her role as a Trainee Auditor with the Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General.
Please tell us a little bit about your role.
I currently work as a Trainee Auditor at the Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General. In my role, I support audit teams in examining how public funds are managed and used across a range of public sector organisations. My work involves reviewing financial information, analysing evidence, conducting audit testing, and contributing to audit reports. Every day brings new opportunity to learn, collaborate with experienced colleagues, and develop my technical and professional skills.
What were your reasons for applying for your role?
I was attracted to this role because it combines my passion for auditing with the opportunity to contribute to the public good. The Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General has an excellent reputation for promoting high standards in public financial management, and I saw it as an ideal place to learn from experienced professionals while making meaningful contribution to public service.
What do you value most about your job?
What I value most is the opportunity to make meaningful impact while continuing to grow professionally. It is rewarding to know that the work I do supports transparency and accountability in how public money is managed.
What are some of the benefits and supports available to you?
One of the things I’ve appreciated most is the level of supports available especially to new entrants. What opportunities has this role provided for you?
This role has provided me with valuable opportunities to develop both professionally and personally. I’ve gained wide level of experience auditing a variety of public sector organisations from a large department to a large health agency and also some semi-state bodies. More recently, I was promoted to the role of Auditor and placed on the panel, which has been a very encouraging milestone in my career and reflects the opportunities for growth within the office.
What has surprised you since starting this role?
One thing that has really surprised me is the variety of work and clients involved. Every audit is different, so you’re constantly learning about different systems used in the various public sector organisations. Also, I was also pleasantly surprised by how supportive and approachable everyone has been. From my first day, colleagues were always willing to share their experience and help me develop. This supportive culture made settling into the role much easier than I expected.
What aspect of the role do you particularly enjoy?
Every audit engagement presents new challenges and opportunities to develop my technical and analytical skills. I enjoy the opportunity to continuously learn while contributing to work that has a real public impact.
Would you recommend a career in the public sector and why?
Absolutely. I would recommend a career in the public sector to anyone who wants to do meaningful work while continuing to grow professionally.
