Meet Orla - Administrative Officer in the Department of Climate, Energy & the Environment

Orla Administrative Officer in the Department of Climate, Energy & the Environment.

Orla tells us about her role as an Administrative Officer in the Department of Climate, Energy & the Environment (DCEE).

Please tell us a little bit about your role.

I work as an Administrative Officer on the Land and ETS team, in the Climate Sector of DCEE. I work on the Emissions Trading System (ETS), focusing on ETS 2 policy and implementation in Ireland.

What were your reasons for applying for your role?

I studied Geography and Geology in college and was interested in working in a relevant area to that! I wanted to feel like I was making a difference with the work I was doing, which led me to the Civil Service. Having the option to apply under the Energy and Environment Stream gave me peace of mind that I would be placed in a role that was in my area of interest.

What do you value most about your job?

A major benefit of working as an AO is the flexibility! I can avail of flexi time, work from home and also have flexibility around my working hours which is really helpful to manage work/life balance!

What are some of the benefits and supports available to you?

There are a wide range of benefits and supports in the civil service! The Educational Support Scheme supports staff with further education and development, the Shorter Working Year Policy is a great option for people with commitments outside of work, such as their families. CSEAS is also available as a mental health support for all staff. I have availed of the Eye testing support under the VDU scheme, and plan to avail of the Cycle to Work scheme too.

What opportunities has this role provided for you?

This role has provided me with so many opportunities so far! I have had the opportunity to travel to Brussels to attend Working Parties on the Environment several times this year. I am also undertaking the IPA Emerging Leaders Graduate Programme currently which provides AOs from across the Civil Service with the tools to progress in their careers and facilitates networking with colleagues across a wide range of departments. I have also had the opportunity to attend the European Union Youth Forum on behalf of the Department!

What has surprised you since starting this role?

The amount of opportunities! There is a great culture of facilitating progression and trying new things. The option to go on mobility to a different department is a great option to learn about a completely different area!

What aspect of the role do you particularly enjoy?

I really enjoy working with colleagues across Departments on policy, and learning from people in different areas!

Would you recommend a career in the public sector and why?

I would definitely recommend a career in the public sector! At AO level, the work/life balance is brilliant and you have so many opportunities to learn and progress!
