The Role

In the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, within the National Monuments Service (NMS), Grade III Archaeologists will be responsible for carrying out archaeological surveys and/or investigations, while also contributing to the development of relevant policies, legislation, guidance and regulatory standards. They will also be tasked with inspecting archaeological excavations or other activities regulated under the National Monuments Acts. Those appointed to Archaeologist Grade III will have the opportunity to embrace new challenges, do purposeful work and make a real difference in Irish society.


Requirements

Essential

Candidates must have on or before the competition closing date:

  • A qualification at a minimum Level 8 (Honour’s Bachelor’s Degree Archaeology) or: a Level 9 or above post-graduate degree in Archaeology on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) (or NARIC Ireland Foreign Qualifications equivalent) in Archaeology;
  • After attaining the above qualification, a minimum of three years' relevant post-qualification experience;
  • A good knowledge of Irish archaeology, relevant policy and legislative frameworks (national, EU and international);
  • Experience and strong knowledge of heritage conservation, management and practices, including archaeological survey, excavation, planning/development issues and regulation;
  • Practical experience and good knowledge of archaeological excavation;
  • Strong team working skills, including an ability to contribute effectively as part of a team and across the organisation;
  • A high level of motivation and enthusiasm with a demonstrated ability to work independently, as required;
  • A proven ability to identify and access appropriate data sources and to analyse, evaluate and disseminate relevant material;
  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail with the ability to handle multiple workloads and/or conflicting priorities to tight deadlines;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to write technical reports that are clear, well-structured and unambiguous;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships both internally and externally;
  • Good Information Technology (IT) skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Word and Excel.
