My role is to support the Office in achieving its mission to provide independent assurance that public funds and resources are used in accordance with the law, managed to good effect and properly accounted for.

I do this by undertaking audits on the financial statements of government departments and public bodies, evaluating existing internal controls and ensuring public funds are used for their intended purpose.

I applied for the role of Auditor because the opportunity to develop my technical expertise by studying for a Professional Accountancy Qualification while simultaneously gaining practical experience of working in audit appealed to me.

The work we do in the Office is valuable in ensuring transparency, accountability and responsible use of public funds across the entire Public Sector and therefore, I get a strong sense of purpose from my job.

The role offered the opportunity to gain hands-on audit experience while studying towards a professional accounting qualification. I saw it as a great foundation for a long-term career in accounting and auditing.

What I value most is the opportunity to gain practical audit experience while working towards my professional accounting qualification. The support from experienced colleagues has helped me develop my knowledge and skills.

I have had the opportunity to work on audits for a range of public sector bodies, including hospitals, semi-state bodies, and universities. This has helped me understand how different organisations operate.

I enjoy that the role provides continuous learning. Every audit helps me build my technical knowledge, improve my analytical skills, and apply what I have learnt from my professional accounting studies to real situations.

After attending a public service presentation whilst in college, there was a piece on the Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General and the role they play in monitoring and review of the use of public money and strengthening public accountability.

Thanks to the ‘Back to Education Initiative’ I was able to go back to college as a mature student after a career in customer service, to pursue a new career in finance.

As a beneficiary of a publicly funded scheme, I wanted to join the office and help in their statutory remit, as I would not be in this position now as a qualified accountant and currently on a panel for promotion, had that scheme not been available to me.

What I value most is the pride in which I take in fulfilling my duties as a member of the office. I feel that I am making a real and meaningful difference in the way which public funds are being spent.

I currently work as a Trainee Auditor at the Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General. In my role, I support audit teams in examining how public funds are managed and used across a range of public sector organisations.

My work involves reviewing financial information, analysing evidence, conducting audit testing, and contributing to audit reports. Every day brings new opportunity to learn, collaborate with experienced colleagues, and develop my technical and professional skills.

I was attracted to this role because it combines my passion for auditing with the opportunity to contribute to the public good.
